The musical collective known as Antibalas (Spanish for bullet-proof) was conceived of in Mexico City and formed in Brooklyn, New York. Led by sax player Martin Perna (the sole constant member throughout the group’s career), Antibalas is strongly influenced by Nigerian Afrobeat, as well as American R&B and Latin dance grooves, and have developed a reputation as one of America’s leading interpreters of Afrobeat. Throughout the years, members of Antibalas have served as musical directors and the house band in the Broadway hit FELA!, including writing original music for the show. Members have also collaborated/performed with Iron & Wine, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Mark Ronson, TV on the Radio, and The Roots.
Their 2017 release, Where the Gods are in Peace, true to classic Afrobeat’s potential to tackle dire social and political issues via cathartic party music, emphasizes positivity and hope: “We are still very much a political band, but as we mature we present and pay homage to the deep courage of our ancestors, we express a message of peace, harmony, and dance, and we take a hard look into the past while forging a future of solutions.”
