Though Ben Stevenson grew up steeped in Edmonton’s punk scene, his world unfolded at the age of 18 when he heard Outkast, 2pac and Biggie Smalls for the first time. With the love and interest of this unfamiliar sound came a decision: he never wanted to be stuck in a specific genre or limit himself to a singular intake. The resulting work is a culmination of vast influences and impressions. Dipping into falsettos and contrasting with raspy timbres, Ben Stevenson melds together a collective of genres, from neo-soul to syncopated beats of rhythm and blues, recently earning his 7-track EP Dirty Laundry a coveted Juno nomination. Be sure to catch Stevenson’s solo show as well as a special reunion show with Our Mercury.
