Edmonton-born rapper Roland “Rollie” Pemberton – better known as Cadence Weapon – began rapping when he was 13 and has been in the scene since 2005, when he released his mixtape Cadence Weapon is the Black Hand and first album Breaking Kayfabe. Growing up, Cadence Weapon was constantly surrounded by musical inspiration; his father was a hip hop DJ on CJSR and his mother was a pianist, so it’s no surprise that he followed closely in their footsteps! Subsequent to his initial releases, Cadence Weapon was signed to ANTI-, an American-based record label. It was with this label that he released two more albums: Afterparty Babies (2008) and Hope in Dirt City (2012). Further to his positively reviewed albums, Cadence Weapon was also named the Edmonton Poet Laureate in 2009.
