Edmonton-based N3K has been, in one way or another, playing together since its members were in their early teens. Composed of Ross Nicoll, Connor Ellinger and Dean Kheroufi, the trio bonded over a shared interest in jazz and a fevered participation in the local open-mic scene, notably contributing to the much-storied, now-defunct Expressionz Café. They are also the ones you may have seen as the foil-clad robots jamming on Whyte Avenue. Taking their cues from jazz/hip-hop crossover artists like Robert Glasper, N3K’s instrumental jazz-funk finds its roots in improvisation, with a deep groove that progresses from mellow, ambient trip-hop into spacey dance floor bangers. The trio recently released Lucky, Extra, officially denoting their entire sonic journey from 2010 to now.
