A six-piece ensemble hailing from Winnipeg, Royal Canoe comes armed with falsettos, guitars, effects pedals, drums, basses, tambourines, shakers, and a six-keyboard super-weapon. Comprised of members from the Waking Eye, The Liptonians, and TELE, these musical mad scientists have perfected the art of tossing disparate genres into a blender, creating dance floor-ready songs with distinctly unique time signatures and haunting distorted vocals.
Since coming together in 2010, Matthew Peters, Bucky Driedger, Matthew Schellenberg, Derek Allard, Michael Jordan, and Brendan Berg have toured extensively, opening for the likes of Alt J, Of Montreal, and Bombay Bicycle Club. In 2012 alone, Royal Canoe released two independent EPs, Extended Play and Purple to Gold, followed by Today We’re Believers, with L.A.‘s Roll Call Records and Toronto’s Nevado Records. Momentum hasn’t ceased as the record was nominated for Alternative Album of the Year at the 2014 Juno Awards.
