30 Sep Beats & Brews: 2016 UP+DT Craft Beer Tour
Few things go together like drinking beer and listening to good music.
This year at UP+DT we’re thrilled to introduce new partnerships with a handful of Canadian breweries to keep your taste buds titillated during the festival. With different venues being sponsored by different purveyors of hoppy happiness (and one distillery for good measure!), festival go-ers will have a chance to try a selection of different brews. Think of it as a mini craft beer festival if you will.
Before you order yourself a cold one at one of the 17 UP+DT venues, learn a little bit more about these great Canadian beers.
Venue Partner: Yellowhead Brewery, Freemason’s Hall
Yellowhead Premium Lager
A light golden-amber, this lager is alive with a gentle effervescence. Naturally carbonated and led by aromas of mild hops and fresh grass, Yellowhead’s texture is crisp with gentle malt sweetness and a subdued bitterness on the palate. This lager would appeal to someone who appreciates a fine brew, enjoys a beer with their meal and appreciates a local Canadian product.

Golden Gaetz Golden Ale showcases the renowned quality of Canadian malts. The malt furnishes the backbone of light bread or biscuit with sweet corn while the hops provide balance with a hint of lemon followed by black pepper and just a whisper of dark berries. Its lower strength and bitterness make it the perfect beer to enjoy on a patio, while camping or pretty much anywhere.
Pesky Pig Pale Ale
An American style pale ale, Pesky Pig is meant to really let the hops sing. The malt presence is quiet but supportive for the rambunctious hop flavours of grapefruit, papaya, and other tropical fruits. The usual hop bitterness has been reigned in while the flavours and aroma have been allowed to run amok making for a delicious, intense, yet ultimately quaffable beer.
Open Road American Brown Ale
Open Road Brown Ale is for those looking for something a little darker and malt forward. Pumpernickel bread and raisins dominate the palate but finish with chocolate while the hops lend just a hint of citrus and pine to balance out the sweetness of this easy drinking dark beer.
Homesteader Belgian Saison
Homesteader Saison is an exciting and refreshing celebration of brewing tradition. The Belgian yeast strain is responsible for the flavours and aromas of banana, apricot, clove, spice and bubble gum. That’s right, bubble gum.

This Calgary Crafted, Alberta Black Ale, combines the full sweet malt flavour of roasted black and caramel malts, with potent bitter hops. Stalwart and bold, it will douse your coal-fired thirst with citrus aromas balanced with roasted espresso, chocolate and licorice. A distinctly dark and flavourful ale that carefully balances the sweet flavours of the dark malts with the bitterness of the hopping.

Steam Whistle Pilsner
Steam Whistle Pilsner offers the style and flavour of the great Pilsners of Europe, yet is brewed fresh right here in Canada. Crafted under the watchful eye of our Czech-born Brewmaster, this golden-coloured Bohemian Pilsner is characterized by a floral hoppy aroma, a softly sweet, full malty character that is balanced by a pleasant bitterness and a clean, crisp finish.

Amber Brown Ale
This London style brown ale is traditionally hopped with US Goldings hops. It serves as a refreshing all-purpose beer for those who enjoy dark ales. A mild caramel malt aroma predominates with undertones of oral hops. This amber notes toffee and caramel flavours, with hints of coffee and roasted malt, ending with a slight spiciness and mild dryness.
Scona Gold Kölsch
This light German style ale is a delightfully crisp and refreshing beer that is sure to be a thirst quencher. Mild malt aromas with subtle fruit notes come through, and then hit you with biscuit and malt flavours, with light fruity esters and a crisp dry finish and mild lingering bitterness.
Main Squeeze Grapefruit Ale
Main Squeeze Grapefruit ale is a wheat ale bursting with flavour. This brew is infused with delicious grapefruits and wheat malt giving it the perfect balance of flavour and making it refreshing, light, and easy to drink.
Aprikat Apricot Wheat Ale
Aprikat is a North American style fruit beer. They start with a base wheat ale and infuse it with apricot flavour. Its overall impression is of fresh orchard picked apricots. The aroma starts and finishes with apricots. Aprikat finishes surprisingly dry, leaving the palate clean and ready for the next quaff.

Long Shadows IPA
For this take a North American IPA, every last drop of oily & resiny goodness has been squeezed out of their favourite American hops. All the flavours and aromas in the hops of the Pacific Northwest floral, pine, citrus, spice, and funk find a home in this beer.
Restrained malt character, high mineral content water, high carbonation, and moderate bitterness combine to create a distinctively dry beer. Hop oil and alcohol subdue the bitterness, letting the beer finish clean; leaving your palate is refreshed. What lingers is the fond sensation of hop flowers dancing on your tongue.
